John Higgins scored one of the most satisfying victories of his career and ended a sequence of four years without a ranking title by beating Joe O’Connor 10-6 in the final of the Weide Cup World Open in Yushan, China.
One of snooker’s all-time greats, Higgins feared that his days of lifting trophies were over, particularly after a series of a narrow defeats in crucial matches, most painfully a 10-9 reverse from 9-4 ahead in the 2022 Tour Championship final against Neil Robertson.
Wishaw’s 49-year-old Higgins has, at last, buried those demons by capturing his first ranking title since the 2021 Players Championship. And it’s a huge event – with a top prize of £175,000 which lifts him to eighth in the Johnstone’s Paint World Rankings and up to third in the Johnstone’s Paint One-Year list. He now has 32 ranking titles, behind only Ronnie O’Sullivan (40) and Stephen Hendry (36).
Anthony Hamilton has just under two months to prepare for what could be his final tournament as a professional, at the season ending World Championship, and he’s determined to make the most of it.
The Sheriff of Pottingham has enjoyed a stellar career, which spans across an uninterrupted run of 34 years on the World Snooker Tour since 1991. He celebrated a landmark moment in 2017 when he won a maiden ranking title at the German Masters.

Resurgent Stephen Maguire ground out a 6-4 victory over Ali Carter at the BetVictor Welsh Open to reach his first ranking event final since 2020.

World number 29 Maguire had not even appeared in a ranking event quarter-final this season prior to this week, but has shown his renowned fighting spirit in Llandudno to make it through to the conclusion. On Sunday he will battle Mark Selby over 17 frames for the Ray Reardon Trophy and a top prize of £100,000, with Glasgow’s 43-year-old Maguire aiming for a seventh career ranking title and first since the 2020 Tour Championship.
Xu Si made the third 147 of his career during his BetVictor Welsh Open qualifying match against Bulcsu Revesz in Barnsley on Thursday.
The break came in the fourth frame as China’s Xu potted 15 red with blacks and cleared the colours to complete the perfect break. That made the score 2-2, and he went on to win 4-2, making a 113 in frame six.
Venue Cymru in Llandudno hosts the world’s top stars from February 10-16 for the BetVictor Welsh Open. Gary Wilson defends the title in a field of 64 players, battling for the Ray Reardon Trophy.

Selby Retains League Title And Makes 147
Mark Selby delivered a masterclass to win the BetVictor Championship League Snooker Invitational for a second consecutive year, beating Kyren Wilson 3-0 in the final in his home city of Leicester.
Selby also made a 147, the sixth maximum of his career, during the last day of the event as he hit top form to win his second title of the season and first since the Unibet British Open in September.
Neil Robertson insists that the BetVictor Bonus up for grabs at next week’s BetVictor Welsh Open will not bring him extra pressure, despite the fact that he has 15 players chasing him for the £150,000 windfall.
